The BBC has a habit of going back to the same classic stories many times.
Here are two more dramatisations of Henry James’ classic chiller along with an unabridged reading.
When a new young Governess arrives at Bly, a remote country house in Essex, she fears that her two young charges, Flora and Miles, may be hiding a dark secret.
As the days go by, she witnesses some strange visions which lead her to the conclusion that the house - and the children - are possessed by evil forces.

Wow, I thought that this ‘classic’ was a terribly boring book. But that’s just my opinion; I’m happy that people share.

James’ book (& much of his work generally) has the action take place in the psychological realm, with a very rich play of language. The reader is invited to speculate on the truth of the events: is the character deluded; otherwise unbalanced; or did the events actually occur? Is the report reliable? Do the events bear the significance the narrator attaches to them? It’s not a slasher movie, right enough, with jump scares aplenty.
